Three University of Arkansas – Fort Smith geoscience majors traveled to southeastern California during the final week of the Spring 2026 semester to conduct fieldwork as part of an ongoing research project led by Dr. Dave Mayo, associate professor of geoscience.
Students Gretzky Clarke, Cecilia Long, and Jesse Lumpkin joined Mayo in studying a large extinct volcanic field. The trip marked the fourth year of field research at the site. Over that time, nine ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ geoscience majors have participated in the project.
According to Mayo, the research has resulted in geologic mapping of the volcanic field, the collection and analysis of dozens of volcanic rock samples, and new interpretations of the role volcanism played in the geologic history of western North America's tectonically active continental margin.
The team has presented findings from the project at three annual meetings of the Geological Society of America and is preparing two manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. One paper focuses on geologic mapping of the volcanic field, while the second examines geochemical modeling of the volcanic rocks.
Mayo added that over the past several years, three of the nine students who have contributed to the research have gone on to receive fully-funded geology teaching assistantships at R1 research universities.
