Marlin G. Williams has over 20 years experience as a Global Diversity and Inclusion Officer for two Fortune 500 Organizations, professional speaker, STEM Advocate, and media contributor. Marlin has also had a successful career as a Mainframe Coder, Deputy Chief Information Officer, Human Resource Executive and Technology Entrepreneur. Marlin is the Founder of Sisters Code and was appointed to serve as the Diversity and Inclusion Entrepreneur-In-Residence for TechTown Detroit.
After college, Marlin was an aspiring mortician until she joined Compuware Corporation where she learned to code in seven languages in 13-weeks. In less than a year she emerged as a mainframe programmer developing and maintaining code for the automotive and banking industry. During this time Marlin noticed that she was often the only woman and person of color at the technology table, thus her passion for diversity and inclusion emerged.
Marlin was ultimately asked to serve as the first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Executive in Compuware’s 30-year history. Marlin implemented the strategy which included the enhancement of the recruiting and retention efforts, identification of core competencies, and the creation of diversity business objectives that were strategically aligned to the bottom-line. Marlin was also selected to serve as the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles where she restructured and implemented an enterprise wide-initiative including the successful revival of Employee Resource Groups and the formation of work stream groups to enhance recruiting, retention, succession planning and leadership development.
Marlin transitioned from the private sector to the public sector and became Deputy Chief Information Officer for the City of Detroit, where she and her team successfully developed the City’s first e-government initiative. She also led collaboration across ten unique agencies to support the technology and infrastructure required for Super Bowl XL. With the assistance of her team, she successfully developed the city’s first e-government initiative, which allowed 900,000+ citizens the opportunity to engage city government via the Internet.
Marlin founded Sisters Code with a simple goal to educate, empower, and entice women ages 25 – 85 to explore the world of coding and technology. Essentially she wanted to “Awaken the Mature Geek.” Most recently Sisters Code was featured on MSNBC highlighting their effort to bridge the gender gap in tech and empower women to believe they could excel in the field of technology.
As a Diversity and Inclusion Leader Marlin works with corporations to foster candid conversations and action plans related to diversity and inclusion. Marlin works with organizations to assess their current state in an effort to further their progress towards creating a diverse and inclusive environment.
Marlin serves as a media contributor and speaker traveling the world as a S.T.E.M. Advocate serving as a speaker with the intent of bridging the gender and racial gap in technology, organizations, and corporations. Through her social enterprise, Sisters Code, Marlin also works to expose women to the world of technology, providing access and education. Sisters Code mission is to “Awaken the Mature Geek”and is targeted towards women ages 25-85.
Marlin has been a featured speaker and media contributor for Microsoft Corporation, SXSW, Techonomy, Tech Week, Meeting of the Minds, Yes We Code, WDIV, MSNBC and many more.
Marlin is the author of Always Believe a motivational e-book for girls. She also recorded a CD Single with a message of motivation for girls also entitled “Always Believe” and a CD Single geared towards the celebration of women entitled “This Groove.”
