Online Slut-Shaming of Girls – Keeping Kids Safe Online

Joerg Koch/AP

I recently had an opportunity to participate in a live chat with teens about “slut-shaming.”  Sixteen-year-old Rookie Reporter Temitayo Fagbenle says at her school girls are often the victims of “slut-shaming,” having explicit photos and videos of themselves posted online and shared with their peers.

Slut-Shaming is when someone using Social Media sites to share explicit photos and videos to shame women and girls among their peers.  The conversation with the teens was eye-opening and informative.  This is a very important topic, which unfortunately is happening to girls around the world.

My advice to teens is to NEVER share a nude photo with anyone.  I am not blaming the girl if their photo is exposed, however I am encouraging them to make the decision to protect themselves.   Although it is wrong for anyone to betray your trust, empower yourself and don’t provide them with the explicit photos.

Bottom-line:  Don’t share Nude and innapropriate photos with anyone, ever!
